Day 3
Having an unspoiled, wild, deserted beach all to yourself is something everyone should try at least once. But first Paul went for a morning hike in the mountains behind the house, then down to the beach to watch some surfing, since Jaco is known for this.
He talked a Brazilian former pro surfer who has lived here for 20 years. He mentioned a beach we should visit, just down the road. That’s how we discovered the little cove where we would spend the rest of the day.
We grabbed the snorkel bag and headed out. On the way through town we had breakfast in a cute cafe and weren’t disappointed. Their typico had eggs, rice and beans, sour cream, choice of meat, fresh oj and cafe con leche. Yummmy.
We headed over to Playa Herradura, where we were told the surf is calmer. We walked along the deserted beach for thirty minutes, until we found the cove.
Our Brazilian surf-specialist was right, the setting was inspired. The water was warm and turquoise colored beyond the waves. A bit too stirred up to snorkel but by surfer’s standards, these were calm waters. We relaxed for a long
time just soaking it all in. Cali enjoyed the hermit crab convention going on behind our log, thick as a carpet. They scattered across the sand and disappeared into tiny holes.
On the way home we found an Auto Mercado, and bought some mighty pricey food stuffs. The groceries in this town are sometimes double or triple to what we are used to at home, a bit unexpected. We passed on the twelve dolla
Bryers and bought a watermelon instead. Did splurge on some Sabra hummus.
We chose a relaxed evening in, swimming, some kid + kitty playtime, a light dinner, Spanish movie, and starting a new novel.
