Day 42Family Travel Costa Rica

White water rafting day! Kier did this on a previous trip to Costa Rica seven years ago, but it was Cali’s first. We’ve managed to hold her off until now. She loves adventure sports, much to her dad’s dismay.

They were told to be ready at 8:30 sharp. They could be picked up at 9:09 sharp. It turned out to be a private tour just for our three They provided one guide, another guide in training, and another person because they still needed more weight.

They drove for an hour to get to Rio Savegre. Closer to the river they stopped at a restaurant, got the raft out of the back, and blew it up with a long extension chord and a compressor. Then they strapped the raft onto the roof for the rest of the way.

Kier and Derek sat at the front and Cali was in the middle. Cali’s favorite parts were when the river was getting intense and the guide would yell for everyone to lean in so people wouldn’t pop out.

Halfway through the trip they parked the raft and walked to a waterfall. There they had a fresh pineapple. They threw some left over pieces into the water and fish came and ate them.

There was one calm part of the river where they were able to get out and swim next to the raft. But once out it was difficult to get back in. One person was pushing Cali up from the water and two people were trying to pull her in. After that a lot more rapids.

There was enough of a thrill to please Cali’s sense of adventure and enough safety to please her parents. A good balance.

After rafting they changed into a dry set of clothes. They stopped at a restaurant and had a casado with garlic mahi mahi, rice and beans, and a diced heart of palm salad. They were all raving about the meal.

We met them in town and brought dry shoes for their pruney feet. After a bit of shopping, we went for Tsunami sushi
and had a Bruce Lee and Godzilla roll, among others.

On the way home we were drenched in a downpour. It was the right way to end a wet adventure filled day.
