High School Cages and Bumpy Innards

Jaco, Costa Rica

Day 47

Still in search of a school for Cali. She is doing her courses online will be attending school here for language enrichment.

Originally we were told by our real estate guy that summer vacation ends July 5. Last week Kier and I went to the public school to sign Cali up, but were
told vacation was extended until July 20. The school yard was empty. Reluctantly the guard at the gate said we could go in and talk to the secretary, but to take off our sunglasses so the security cameras could get a good picture of our faces. Really? Were we going to grab a few desks and make a quick getaway on our getaway bicycles? We happily smiled and waved at the cameras, even gave them a good profile shot. At the office we were told to come back and talk to the director on the 20th. When we were leaving Kier and I commented on why they would need such tall fences with barbed wire on top. It looked like they were trying to keep in wild animals or inmates.

On the morning of the 20th, we returned to the school hoping vacation hadn’t been extended again. The yard was filled with kids. The man wouldn’t let us in the front gate because Kier was wearing shorts. Last time he did, so this was confusing. We also found out that we were at the high school. There were no kids the last time we visited the school since it was extended vacation.

I was hoping to enroll her in the elementary school with the younger kids. Maybe I was being overly protective and she would be fine in the high school. Then, as we were leaving, through the high fence the guys were cat calling and behaving badly toward Kier. They were looking and acting like caged animals. Now we understood why the gate guard didn’t let us in, probably for our own protection. Thanks for making that decision so simple. I will not be sending my 13 year old to that zoo.

We went over to the public elementary school. We waited for quite sometime and eventually got the information we needed from someone very helpful. Cali was too old to attend there, it only went to the 6th grade.

That made our decision simple. She would go to the Catholic K-12 school. Paul and Kier had checked out that option last week and it was a good one. She would start the next day.

We got home just as Paul was also getting out of his shuttle from his trip to Atlanta. He had a Nascar shuttle driver and got home in record time. Even though he was gone for less than a week, we have many new discoveries to show him, including the school choice.

Throughout the week Madi continued to work at the prenatal center. This week, in addition to her other duties, she learned how to do ultrasounds. She was very very excited reading through the manual, and even more excited when she got it up and running. She was hoping for a pregnant woman to practice on, but settled for me and all my bumpy innards.

I went to get my hair color done at Monica Hair. She knew a little English. When she was trying to match my color to the book she told me I have a fiesta of color on my head, which is salon-speak for, Girrrl, you should have come in to see me sooner. She was speaking super fast Spanish and said, “You understand everything I’m saying, don’t you?” I smiled and she laughed really hard.

Here is a picture of our sunset, no filters or photoshop. Looks like someone scribbled with an orange crayon on the sky.
