Natural Art a los Ticos

mango wood Costa Rica

Tico artists are inspired by the natural beauty around them, and it shows in their creations. My favorite take-aways from Costa Rica are the items crafted out of wood, specifically mango wood.

There are vases, masks, mugs, and wine holders. In between the salad bowls and coaster sets, don’t be alarmed to find wooden male genitalia. Yup, just literally hanging out with the kitchen stuff, like that’s where you’ll find it. Don’t know why they’re in the kitchen tool section, and don’t want to know. You can also find smaller, non-kitchen sized versions in key chains, paper weights, dressed in little shirts. I don’t need my youngest daughter to feel like she needs a shower after bringing me a key chain. She asked me what that was, I told her, she yelled “Ew, ew, ew,” and ran away spazzing. Perhaps the artists are taking this natural art thing a little too far, or at the very least need to have a separate store.
