Day 144
Rue Cler
Thanks mostly to Julia Child, Rue Cler is one of the most famous street markets in Paris. With its authentic
shops and cafes spilling out onto the original cobblestones, no one can argue with it’s enduring charm. We braced ourselves for the usually bustling crowds we’ve generally found when visiting any Parisian market on a Saturday morning, only to find it practically deserted. It’s the only market we’ve been to that had room for a few tumbleweeds to blow through the street, unobstructed. While surprisingly quiet, we enjoyed the elbow room, and watched the locals and their Golden Retrievers do their market shopping for the day.
Rue Cler, of course, has all the usual market players present and accounted for: florists, butchers, bakeries, cheeseries, delicatessens, chocolate shops, seafood specialists, fresh produce, and a cafe to rest your feet and have an espresso. It felt more like an unknown destination than a famous one, but in many ways, that only added to its charm.
