Carcasonne; the Medieval Village, the Game

Day 301, Carcasonne, France

We drove from Bordeaux to Pezenas, down the coast toward the Mediterranean. Always enjoy driving through different vineyard regions, and having Paul explain what wine is produced from the fields.

CarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneWe stopped in Carcasonne, a fortified city that has inspired one of our favorite games. It was one of the few games we would take on our summer trips to Europe that each of us never tired of playing. It’s a great game that can be played with a variety of ages.

The girls were small when we last came here, and I remember Cali was tired that day. We carried her around a lot. I remember where we got crepes, where Kier lit a candle in the cathedral for her teacher, other key moments. Now we are adding more.CarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonneCarcasonne

Travelling in off season has its pros and cons. Last time we were in Carcasonne, you could barely move, it was packed. Then later, when we got to Pezanas, we didn’t predict that our favorite bead store and moules frites restaurant would only open in the end of April. Double bummer. But now we know that many of the towns along the Med are extremely seasonal and are virtually shut down for most of the year, and we’ll choose accordingly. We were planning to stay in Pezanas for 4 days, but since it is like a ghost town, we will move on to other towns which have a little more life in them.
