Cockroach Alarm

Day 22

I was startled awake at 5 am by a commotion in the girls’ room. Well, it wasn’t really a room since we were staying in an open-air jungle house, more of a piece of a wall. You know that common saying, “It’s all fun and games until a huge roach ends up on someone’s face. ” Well, maybe it’s not so common.

My worst fear was a snake incident. So when they all showed up freaked out and huddled on our bed over a roach, I’m not gonna lie, I was relieved. An open air experience is great, only problem is this; the bugs aren’t sleeping in your house, you’re sleeping in theirs.

Cockroach on the face alarm clock, it’s over the top creepy. Wish I could unring that bell, but can’t. They wouldn’t go back to the bed of the incident, and I couldn’t blame them. The four of us were huddled on the double bed under the mosquito netting, next to Paul, who was pretended nothing was happened, hoping he could go back to sleep. Our bed was on a platform, which made them feel better. It was clear they were never leaving our bed, so Paul got up and we went for coffee. I didn’t crush that false sense of security with the climbing capabilities of roaches, but rather and tucked them again.

Paul and I went for a walk on Playa Dominical.

There were a few people camping, the second VW van we’ve seen. We went back into town for a coffee, there was a third, this one in mint condition advertising coffee. We bit.

We woke woke the girls and took them to their horseback riding tour to Naucaya Falls.

Kier especially loved her horse.

We talked to Steve for quite sometime, the man who owns the casita and main house. It’s a fascinating house, open air except for one closed in room on the second floor. He calls that the dry
room because it keeps out the rain and other moisture. The yard is full of fruit trees and a stone pizza oven. He told us about the history of the area, the town, the river behind his property. His house seems to be a bit of a gathering place. People kept stopping by and staying.

After the girls finished horseback riding we drove to Jaco, the town we’ll be living in for the next two months. It was great to get our place, unpack, get groceries, and start poking around to get familiar. After three weeks of driving around the country, I’m ready to settle in for a while. The girls were excited, too.
