Day 66, Summer in Asia

It’s unexpected poetry to be on Route 66 on Day 66 of our summer trip. School starts on Monday, so it’s time to wind this trip down and get home. We started our summer plans based on a super sweet deal of a fare from Chicago to Bangkok, and the trip unfolded from there.

In order to get to Chicago, we decided to do a road trip from Miami. On route there was a bit of a history lesson for the girls. I showed them where I grew up in St. Louis, the house I lived in, all my schools, where I ate ice cream, learned to swim, the complete tour. Next we visited their grandpa and his wife in Columbia, MO–always full of ice cream, bowling, and trips to Plato’s Closet. Once in Chicago we flew through Qatar to Bangkok, Thailand.

The trip pieced itself together from there. After a tour around Southeast Asia, we passed through New Zealand on our way to Los Angeles. From there we road tripped from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, that laps up against our back dock in Miami. We also revisited some of our favorite cities like Houston and New Orleans. We squeezed in more family visits. Paul and the girls also got to see the Grand Canyon for the first time.

We did a total of 11 countries and almost 35,000 miles, 5,365 of them on our two road trips.

Once again, I’m amazed what you can pack into a summer.
