Witch’s Rock and a Howlers Protest

Day 17

The Howler Monkeys next to our house do not like yard work or construction. You can hear them growling at the weed whackers and the backhoe. Their vocal posturing is impressive. They seem to take turns howling so there isn’t a gap in sound. Can’t blame them for protesting any kind of wildlife grooming or rearranging. It’s their right.

We left the fierce chorus of disapproval and went in search of the morning tide. They surfed with mixed results because everyone needs rash guards. The top of the surfboard is rough so your feet won’t slip, but for beginners also acts as a skin grater. That combined with saltwater isn’t fun. But before rash guard shopping we needed some food.

When sitting on the beach sooner or later the vendors will approach. They toot little wooden birds as a greeting to get your attention. They also sell bracelets and other crafty items. It’s one of the few things that reminds you that you’re not in Kansas anymore, there are so many of us here.

We ate a place called Witch’s Rock which is now a surf school, restaurant, brewery, store, etc. It was started by people who were exploring Central America in a van, and then ended up staying. Cali thinks this is more of the
norm than an exception, especially since hearing similar stories in Panajachel. But I never tire of these stories of adventurous pioneers falling in love with a remote part of the world and making it their home, long before the masses follow.

The animals at lunch were two wandering white horses, three large lizards, and black birds with red wing tips.

After lunch we went shopping for rash guards in the abundance of surfing stores here. Decided on a couple.

In the evening we walked down to the ocean and watched the sunset. It seems to be a daily community event. Then we went for pizza in the trees. The restaurant had an upper area where the tables felt like you are sitting in the branches with the Howler Monkeys.

Tomorrow we are leaving Tamarindo and heading toward the city. The two older girls arrive day after tomorrow. We’re excited to show them our favorite CR things so far.
