Gringo Groceries & Cardboard Computers

Panajachel, Guatemala

Had breakfast with Kier because her Spanish teacher cancelled class again. This probably happens once a week. In the afternoon I had coffee with a friend. She is trying to organize a graduation ceremony for her son. While we were at the restaurant we said good-bye to someone who has been living in Pana for 12 years and is moving to California. She has been working for the UN, her daughter is going to school in France. She was always a nice person to have a conversation with, very interesting.

One of the gringo groceries moved locations and is now in the center of town. It used to be much closer to our house, but the space they are in is much bigger. The only catch is that it is in close proximity to another gringo type grocery that is owned by a Guatemalan couple. I hope their business survives. I’ve always shopped at both stores, will continue to do so. Gringo groceries are big business here. I’m a good example of that, I buy mac and cheese and rolled gold pretzels for my Madi. I pay much more for these things here than I do at home.

Madi wasn’t feeling very well, having stomach cramping. Kier was also having some issues. That happens a lot here.

Went to choir this evening. I enjoy it enough to keep going, but I must say I’m used to much more structured music, like the kind that starts with notes on paper and ends with everyone being in tune. That’s all I’ll say about that.

Cali continues to have computer related projects, as in she has to make them out of cardboard. She has already made a keyboard, screen, now she has to make a tower. But those huge towers are fast becoming obsolete. They could have made the project more current by having them do notebook laptops. Two pieces of cardboard, one piece of tape, done.

The girls are often at play practice until 7 pm now, since there are only two weeks left until the show.

Kier went to PanaRock to have supper with her friends.
