Medical Trip to Nicaragua

What better way to start the summer than a week with three pairs of scrubs, a stethoscope, and a new country to explore with other premeds. For our middle daughter, it was the perfect mix of medical clinics and exploring this beautiful, surprisingly under-rated country.

The group and the hostel.

They toured a cigar factory, did some hiking to see a volcano, saw a beautiful lake, and some of the city sites.

The main event, the medical clinics were fantastic. The group was able to help in the clinic which processed over 200 people a day. They were able to watch a c-section and other interesting procedures. They also toured the medical school and the cadaver room.

Best part of the trip:
1.The clinics and seeing procedures she wouldn’t be able to watch in North America.
2. Seeing the lush beautiful country side, and colorfully painted town squares.
3. Group experience was great.
Worst part:
1. Being the only one in the group to get her 2 oz travel size hand sanitizer confiscated at the airport.  Hers was the only Marvel comics one. They also took her tiny travel size hair spray (pump, not aerosol). This was just a minor annoyance, obviously.
2. The bedbugs in the hostel and how the hotel and the travel company kept calling them mosquito bites because Nicaragua doesn’t have bed bugs. The team before Madi’s told everyone the hostel was infested, and the assured the next group that the problem was solved. There were pictures of the actual bugs on Madi’s pillow, bites all over body, but they refused to acknowledge the problem. All part of the travel misadventure.

Overall, a great experience. We need to get back there as a family.
