Costa Rican Food is Not Mexican

Day 50.

There was a Mexican potluck after church today. That tends to inspire the kids to wake up for the taxi that leaves at 8:50.

The priority for the younger two girls, to get there early enough to be able to watch the toddlers in the nursery. Kier and my priority, to sit in chairs directly under a fan. Everyone knows to look up before you sit down. The younger two got to work in the nursery and Kier and I got excellent fan
seats.

The pastor last week joked about how people who aren’t from here may confuse Mexican food with Costa Rican food, but that they are distinctly different. All the locals laughed. After living here for a little while, I see how that’s true. They both may have a rice or a bean component, but they are very different. We brought cookies just to stay out of the fray of confusion. A good cookie is universally liked.

During the potluck, we sat with a couple who are here for a week from South Carolina. There are many teams hosted here. They don’t build houses or do dental or medical clinics, the way we did in
Guatemala. Although I don’t know the system in place, the health care here seems good. Good enough that many people from the US come and get dental work and other medical procedures done here.

Madi and Cali went to the Radical Spanish youth group event in the afternoon on the beach. They played ultimate frisbee, baseball and ate watermelon. Madi thought it was fun and even participated in the sporty parts, and hit the baseball after seven tried (yay, Madi). The pitcher caught the ball but she ran to first base anyway, just to see what that was like.

We ended with a movie and popcorn night.
