Day 42, Summer in Asia, Bangkok, Thailand
No matter what country we’re in, going to see a movie is a consistent family favorite. We’re lucky the world at large is fascinated with what comes out of Hollywood. Sometimes we’ve seen movies before they’ve been released in the States. After being around the world a couple of times, we’re unanimous that this our favorite cinema experience.
The last time we were in Bangkok we had a movie experience to end all movie experiences, at Siam Paragon. This shopping mall is unlike anything we have at home. It’s huge. Plenty of high end, but also has H&M or Superdry, for the more mainstream consumers. There was a pageant going on next to the movie theater. There were many teeny tiny girls in very fancy dresses, vying for the title of Little Miss Bangkok. There was a five-year-old in some very high heels. Later when we came out of the movie, there was a serious lip-syncing competition happening on the stage.
We did a little shopping, but the main event we came for, was the movie. The cinemas are located in a top floor area that also has restaurants and various lounges that go with your ticket purchase. You can get just the movie or buy a higher level that comes with access to a lounge. We head straight for the mother of all movie experiences.
Included in our ticket price was food and drinks before the movie in the fancy lounge, a neck or foot massage, huge leather lounging chairs, thick blanket and pillow. If you like, they’ll go next door and get you a Starbucks. The popcorn is gourmet, and the service is attentive. It’s a whole evening of fun in Thailand, where no elephants were coerced or exploited. One of those family evenings we know we’ll refer back to again and again.
