Day 335, Athens, Greece
The drive from Loutraki to Athens was arid and hilly, a real yawner. I’d been to Athens before but arrived by plane and left by ship. This is the first time I’ve driven through Greece. Part of me still hopes to see hills bubbling with blue domes on white washed buildings. But since we aren’t driving through a travel brochure of Santorini, I took a nap.
Our house is in Vari. Thanks in part to the Summer 2004 Olympics, the subway’s reach was expanded to connect to neighborhoods like this one. By using the train to get downtown, we avoid the crazy driving, expensive parking, and can get much larger, nicer homes for less. This home was the penthouse unit, with a view of the rest of Vari and the Aegean Sea. These are some of our views. This is a three bed, three bath with an outdoor balcony.
Since Kier is coming straight off of finals and recovering from gall bladder surgery, she will need a place to recover. This is her bedroom. The hurricane shutters close to make the room dark for sleeping, which is what we did.
Our bedroom, above, also had a balcony. The bunks below were the younger girls.
After the house tour by the owner, we walked into the village to get a bite to eat, look at the Aegean, and stock the fridge. On the streets were unwanted oranges from the trees and many, many cats. Never seen so many stray oranges or cats.
