Taco Bell or Bank

Living in Guatemala

Today we drove to Xocomil, the waterpark. Lucky for us, my one friend has a shuttle van that would hold all of us. We had gone shopping for snacks the night before. We only had to wait until play practice was over for three of our kids, then we would hit the road.

I went up to the market to buy my friend’s favorite flowers for her birthday. One bunch of flowers is 10Q or $1.20.  I got her two bunches of white lillies, which are her favorite flowers. I went over to her house to give her the flowers and her sauna vouchers. She was over the top happy. She wondered if one of her boys had told me what she wanted. I told her it was pretty easy to figure out on my own. Then she said she wasn’t going to come with us to the Waterpark, but would send her older son instead. I was disappointed that she had decided she wasn’t going to go.

We stopped at an honest to goodness Taco Bell. It came complete with a guard at the door with a shotgun. Cali wondered if the guy was confused and thought Taco Bell was a bank. It was bizarre being in a fast food restaurant with our Guatemalan friends. It just seemed weird, like we were all out of context. Everyone kept raving about the self-serve drinks. Where you buy a cup and get as many refills as you want. The one guy was saying a group of 20 Guatemaltecos would come in and order one small drink and share, that they’d be out of business soon.

We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel. Lots of calls to the hotel, lots of stopping to ask directions. Eventually we found it. It looked a little sketchy when we first drove in. The hotel also had its own guard with a shotgun at the entrance. Everyone has one, it seems. Once we were inside it was a nice place, with a great pool, a couple of slides into the pool.

Madi and Cali swam. Later on the guys also got into the pool and they did chicken fights. All three of the girls were on the guys shoulders. My friend and I couldn’t stop laughing. I wish I’d taken a video. Madi and her horse ended up winning. I had one of the best night’s sleep since arriving here. Didn’t wake up once until 6:30. Decadent. I think it was because there was only the sound of the air conditioner, beautiful, wonderful white noise.
