Unfamiliar Wall Placement and My Hurricane Sister

Family Travel Guatemala

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL!! We love you!

The tuk driver came five minutes earlier than yesterday. Cali wasn’t at the street, but she was on the callejon (pathway) in front of our house going to the street. Tomorrow, we’ll make sure she is actually waiting for him.

When my sister comes to town, she hits it with the force of a hurricane. She fills every minute with activity. Let me illustrate. First we went over to the guy’s house who works on my sister’s house. Then Mia took her daughter to Spanish school while I went for a coffee. Then Mia met me at the Dehli. We went back to the contractor guys house and discussed many options for work that could be done on the house.

Next we went to a huipil paka. Huipil’s are the traditional clothing of the indigenous people here. These are second hand huipil’s, but great for decorations, making into pillows. My sister got two which will be great as wall hangings and I bought one that I’ll make into a large pillow. They are beautiful works of art. Each village has different characteristics. The one I bought is from Santa Catarina, a village very close to us.

After the huipil shopping, I went to pick up my dvd player from my friend’s house and Mia got her daughter from school. We met at the Porch and had a salad and quesadillas.

We went to pick up pretzels for Madi, a lunch staple. We’ve been waiting for a shipment of Rolled Gold pretzels for weeks now. They came in yesterday. I bought 4 bags and will buy another 4 tomorrow. I couldn’t carry any more. Then I walked straight to the school and gave her two bags to start on. We went home and dumped all the stuff we were carrying, dropped Mia’s  daughter off at the family’s house. We walked up to the guy Mia’s bought her bag from and got the strap shortened. She also bought a water bottle holder and another little zipper bag. We walked down to the fabric store and I bought a shoulder bag for groceries, that I will use a great deal while I’m here.

We were both feeling tired. We’d been walking around for hours by now and decided to go to Dos Mundos to chill for a bit. I had a limonada con soda while we reviewed Mia’s long list of what we were supposed to accomplish today. We didn’t get to the electric company or to pick up the plants. She did go to the carpenter who was supposed to have the loft completed three weeks ago, he hopes to have it done next week. She also went to the upholsterer who was supposed to have pillows done weeks ago, but will try to get them done tomorrow. I almost get the impression you need to keep reminding people here to work on the project you are paying them to complete. If you don’t remind them, they seem to work on other things. But I bet they don’t have problems with ulcers.

Well, a few things were marked off, but many items were shifted to tomorrow’s to-do list. We tried to mark at least one more errand off the list, so went to the hardware store to buy paint for the inside garden wall, a faucet for the pila (outside sink), and ordered the tile for the back patio. While Mia completed her shopping there, I went back and picked up the girls from the family’s house, and took them home. While we were walking home we met Kier on the path. She was going to trapeze and fabrics class. Madi was over at a friend’s house.

Cali has a bruise and scrape on her face from running into the bathroom wall. Unfamiliar wall placement, it happens.
