Day 306, Uzes, France
As the sun peeked over the ancient-tiled roofs of Uzes, we knew the big market day of the week had finally arrived. We left our apartment. Here, Cali shows our hallway and front door.We turned the corner to where the market began. This market has little tunnels leading from the central square to the street that circles Uzes.Whenever you need a break, there are plenty of corners where you can have a coffee.
The Uzes market has a distinctly southern feel. Specifically textiles with Provencial colors, pottery, scarves, fresh produce, and of course, baskets! Every time I’ve come to the Uzes market, I’ve left with a market basket, and have quite a collection at home. I always tell myself I don’t need another, and yet I always leave with one. This year I saw something new. Cats, owls, flags, adorned many of the traditional baskets. They are also selling ones that can be clasped on four sides, which is ultimately the one I ended up with.Love these baskets. But there are other things at the market to be enticed by. Scarves. Here they display the scarves in little scarfy mounds. Paul bought a blue one. There are bright table clothes, napkins, and curtains. There are both dried flowers and fresh.Bright dishes.Of course there is lots of fresh food you can eat while shopping. Cali had pizza. There was also paella among many, many other choices. There are many beautiful wooden utensils. We bought a baguette knife with an olive wood handle. There were a number of beautiful spice stands. There was a fresh seafood section, bakery stands, fresh produce from the area. Every stand took great care in displaying their goods artistically. That’s part of what makes this market so charming. We swung by the bakery to get Cali’s birthday cake and breakfast treats. When we returned to the apartment we had bought a baguette, a fancy knife to cut it with, two pairs of sunglasses, Cali’s bd cake for tomorrow, and…wait for it…another market basket for me! Here’s the new bag to add to my Uzes collection, along with Cali’s birthday goodies.
